Winter Wonderland

M.J. Prest | December 2009

‘Tis the season for bad holiday puns, and this year we elected to spare you. Instead, we’ve brought you a very special double issue, packed high with goodies like Santa’s sleigh (sorry, that one snuck in there).

jcrew-leggingsWinter is an especially interesting time in the world of ethical fashion. It’s likely the season where you’re wearing the most clothing, counting everything between your underlayers and your outerwear. (Not to mention all those sparkly baubles you break out for special occasions.)

It’s also probably when you’re doing the most shopping for others, taking ethical consumerism into consideration. And it’s also the time of year that issues of fur and shearling return to the forefront of the ethical debate (for a fresh perspective on this, check out our interview with Project Runway designer Johnny Sakalis).

So without further ado, here’s what you have to look forward to in E.S.’s holiday issue:

Johnny Sakalis was a lightning rod for drama on Project Runway last season, but he’s totally chill and laidback in real life. We sat down with Johnny over brunch to talk about everything from his experience on the show to Lady Gaga’s fashion sense and what we can expect to see from him in the future (including a sneak peek at his Fall/Winter 2010 collection!).

Eco-beauty has really gone mainstream in a big way in 2009. We guide you through a head-to-toe winter beauty ritual using exclusively green products. If you want to go organic, cruelty-free, or fair trade in your primping routine, you have everything you need at your disposal!

Naomi from U.K. eco-boutique MyGreenLipstick.com compiled her top picks for festive frocks to wear to all the holiday parties on your dance card. There’s one for each of the twelve days of Christmas, so check out her slideshow and pick your favorite.

Kara, our DIY Doyenne, brings you a new piece on tricks to update your favorite scarves for this winter. Give your outerwear closet a mini-makeover!

Madison is on a major brooch kick at the moment, so she shares her love for lapel jewelry in this fascinating feature on the history of (and ways to wear) vintage brooches.

Need last-minute gift ideas? We’ve dedicated this issue’s Seam Ripper to the best eco-presents your green can buy.

Finally, we’re very excited to announce two excellent giveaways this month!

As you may already be aware, we’re giving away a pair of Tahitian pearl stud earrings from BrilliantEarth.com. The contest ends on Friday, December 18, so there’s still time to get your entry in if you act fast!

And the week before Christmas is the perfect time to take a moment to treat yourself, so we’re also giving one lucky winner a stylish organic cotton tee from FashionLovesPeople.com. Enter to win between Monday, December 21, and Wednesday, December 23.
