How to Keep Suede Looking New

You’re probably sending all of your winter clothes into storage this month, and in our next issue we’ll be giving you advice on how to properly put away your clothing so that they stay protected through the warmer months.

But to give you an early teaser, check out these tips on how to clean and store suede shoes, bags, or jackets (hopefully you don’t have suede pants!):

  • When you first acquire an item made from suede, pretreat it with a waterproofing protectant. Wilson’s Leather & Suede Protector Spray is a good bet. It’s best never to wear suede in rain or snow, but this ounce of protection will minimize water spots.
  • If you do get your suede item wet, blot with a towel and let it air dry. Do not use a hair dryer — it will make the suede stiff. If you spill something other than water on it, take it to a leather expert ASAP.
  • A suede brush will help you clean dirt from the item and restore the nap to its original condition. Timberland makes a high-quality one.
  • Never apply perfume or use hairspray while wearing suede.
  • Like leather and fur, suede should not be stored in plastic bags or boxes because the natural fiber needs the opportunity to breathe. A cloth garment bag or cotton pillowcase is a much better option.
