The Obama Presidency: HOPE…For Fashion Ethics?

US-POLITICS-INAUGURATION-OBAMA

Of all the reasons to be stoked about the new administration, we admit that ethical fashion isn’t so high on the list. But…

We’re so happy that Michelle Obama is the new First Lady!! There, we said it. Finally.

After trying hard to remain neutral throughout the entire election season, it’s finally time to weigh in on Mrs. Obama. In short, the First Lady’s tendency to support emerging designers could mean very good news for the ethical fashion movement. Clearly she puts a lot of thought into what she wears, and chances are very good that she will use her platform to support the kind of fashion-related causes we cover here.

As Style.com editor Nicole Phelps explained in a recent interview:

“Whereas a lot of other political women or female politicians get dressed for the occasion because they have to, it seems to me that Michelle Obama actually follows fashion and pays attention to it and again chooses people that she wants to support and who will really benefit from her support.”

Icing on the cake.
