New Textile Alert: Wild Wool

web-photos-wild-wool-january-2009-011Chrys Hutchings, the Oregon designer you may remember from being behind eco-fur, is back with a new solution for a New Zealand pest problem: Wild Wool.

First, a little background on the paihamu issue: These non-native possums were brought to New Zealand in the 1800s but quickly dominated their habitat, killing off native species of animals and plants. Today there are 70 million paihamu in New Zealand, which is 17 times the number of New Zealanders. Worse, they continue to multiply, threatening biodiversity and spreading disease throughout the island nation.

Ms. Hutchings works with local trappers who use humane methods to capture these wild animals. For her Wild Wool products, she blends 60 percent merino wool with 40 percent paihamu fur to weave “a premium cashmere-like fabric that is softer, warmer, and lighter than plain wool.”

Among the products currently available are hats, gloves, socks, and scarves, priced between $22 and $48. See the full collection here.
