An Eco-Friendly Hijab

queendom-hijabIt took a while but there is finally an eco-friendly option for observant Muslim women who wear the traditional head scarf: Ottawa-based Queendom Hijabs by designer Abeer Al-Azzawi.

The garments in the Eco Hijab collection are made from soy- and bamboo-based textiles and manufactured in Canada. Ms. Al-Azzawi says she created the line after realizing that all the hijabs she could find were made in South Asia or China and never used eco-friendly materials.

“From all of my research, I never found one eco hijab that was available,” the 25-year-old says from her home in Ottawa.

“It’s not just in the environmental area, the image of the Muslim woman in the media is not represented, period.

“If people don’t focus on the hijab, there isn’t going to be any trends applied to it, let alone eco fabrics.”

The Eco Hijab head scarves — priced at $14.99 each — go up for sale next week for purchase at Queendom-Hijabs.com.
