Vogue Flashback: November 15, 1966
It’s no secret that fashion mags tend to fall short of feminist expectations. Sure, Cosmo’s monthly “how to please a man” advice is funny in a surprisingly patronizing kind of way. But as we were looking through our collection of old Vogues (past finds here and here), it dawned on us that there really is true comedy to be found in fashion rag misogyny. At least if it’s from the 1960s.
And so after the jump, we give you “Looks Men Like At Home”– or rather, looks men like in space, near paintings of giant cartoon body parts, and at super-fancy pajama parties. Enjoy!

Oh how I aspire to dress and hairdo like these pics! Especially the last photo of the beehive / four foot long ponytail hybrid, sort of Liz Taylor a la Cleopatra era style. The fabrics and cuts of all these clothes are to die for, but for my husband there’ll have to be more cleavage showing.
This is truly eye candy for the designer – thanks!

love, LOVE these!
I think my favourite is the 4th look, with the little white dress & striped footie tights. fab! and of course, the first one, because that is just totally crazy.

It’s fun to laugh at the excesses of our forefathers – that’s what lileks.com is all about, after all – but some of these styles would still work today. Word on the mink tennis dress w/ stripy silk tights. Also, the sequined dresses at the end of the spread would still work. But I’d wear them with dark semiprecious stones: jade, malachite, mahogany obsidian. And gray suede shoes.
