‘I Am A Plastic Bag’ at Target
British designer Anya Hindmarch did more for the BYOBag movement than perhaps anyone else last year. The “I’m Not A Plastic Bag” craze was really an iconic moment worldwide, bringing together eco-sensibilities and fashion sense.
Which makes her new collection for Target through their Go International line a little bit disappointing.
The bags — which range in price from $20 to $50 — are now available for sale through her website and they are all… plastic.
What gives? The designs are cute but the quality looks like it just isn’t there. And we’re afraid that manufacturing all that pleather might have canceled out any benefit that Ms. Hindmarch’s reusable grocery bags had for the planet.
Other Go International designers like Rogan have worked with organic cotton in their collections for the mass retailer. We would have liked to see Ms. Hindmarch get creative with textiles rather than settle for plastic after taking such a strong stand last year.
